Thorny Ice Age bamboo fossils more than 37000 years old found in Manipur

Manipur: This latest India News article delivers details about the recent findings of old thorny ice age bamboo fossils, which are believed to be more than 37,000 years old. The body was found in the Chirong River in the Imphal West district of Manipur.

In a paper published in the Journal of Palaeobotany and Palynology, researchers said the fossils were found during a study of fertilizer decomposition near the Chirang River bank. The survey was conducted by the Birbal Sahani Institute of Paleoscience (BSIP).

It stated that the fossil remains found must be around 37000 years old, and that such bamboo with spikes was found in the Ice Age. Furthermore, more research and investigation work are in progress to find more such fossils.

It also started the study of these fossils based on their morphology. It could be under the genus Gimonobamabusa.

This is the first discovery of these spike bamboo fossils. Researchers also stated that the spike on the bamboo is believed to protect it from herbivores, and such was found mostly in the Ice Age. It is excellent news to know that such things have also been discovered in Manipur.

About the Thorny Bamboo fossils discovered in Manipur

The news, as published today in various local newspapers of Manipur, also stated that such bamboo plants with spikes are grown in freezing and dry places. It is also stated that 30000 or more years ago, it was grown, but due to climatic changes, it became extinct in Europe and other parts of the world.

According to the journal, it mentioned that the bamboo remains were not fully converted to ice. The reports also stated that the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot region could be a great landmark for finding the ice age period. Such plants are now extinct in freezing and dry places, but in the northeastern part of India, they continue to survive. This finding is also helpful for researchers to know more about the spike bamboo and the nature of climatic conditions of the Manipur region.

One of the team members of the research, geologist N Herojit of GSI, stated that these fossils were first found in the year 2021- 2022 from the Chirong Village in Imphal West district.
