What is the meaning of Sajibu Cheiraoba?
The Sajibu Cheiraoba is a religious and cultural celebration of Meitei new year or lunar year, celebrated on the first day of Sajibu in the state of Manipur, India. The Sajibu is the first month in the Meitei Lunar calendar, and every year on this day, the festival of Cheiraoba is celebrated throughout the state. Not only in Manipur but also in places like Guwahati, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, kolkata, Bangladesh, USA, China nowadays, by the Manipuri people who have settled there for work or business.
It has been believed that this Sajibu nongma panba Meitei new year started at the time of Maliya Fambalcha (According to Wikipedia resources).
How to Observe this festival?
The observation of this festival from the past history comprises of Offering of ritual and prayer, a feast with family, and hill climbing.
Since traditionally and culturally, the Cheiraoba Festival also comprises of Cultural program at night that includes Thabal chingba, Eshei Nongmai – Musical concert, Sumang lila Stage drama, etc. But since the crisis in Manipur due to the illegal immigrants’ issues, it has seen only ritual celebration without Entertainment activities.
In the past, on this day, young and old people came together to thabal chongba, where cultural dances were conducted in various places of Manipur. Not only thabal chongba but also Haosie game and other entertainment programs were also conducted. But since 2023, after the Illegal immigrants arose in Manipur, all entertainment programs have been neglected.
Not only the thabal chongba but also the Hill climbing or ching kaba program is also conducted at Chinga of Singjamei, Cheiraoching of Chingmeirong on this day. On the Hill climbing spot, there was also the sale of toys, edible items like Bora Singju, Paknam, and so on.
